Purely by chance this week I ran across this LA Times blog entitled Hungry like the wolf: Julie Ann Rhodes goes from rock ‘n’ roll wife to food fame by Scott T. Sterling. I am far from naive enough to believe Mr. Sterling would have taken the time to write his story had I not been married to Nick, but immensely flattered by his respect for my career in food and it’s origins. I do live the life of my choice today…one I enjoy to the hilt….full of great memories, family and friends, food, travel, and I get to write about it all.

This article appears to have sparked some controversy within the Duran Duran world that I would like to address. One of the benefits of having your own blog, is that you have the forum to voice your opinion.

If you take the time to read my blog…and I sincerely hope you do…you will find that I write about my entire life…my childhood, my family, modeling career, acting, marriage, touring with the band, motherhood, from hiring the staff to being the staff, the great friendships that have nourished my soul…some famous names, some not, and how food has played a role throughout. Jewels from The Roving Stove blog is far from being a running commentary on Duran Duran…they are just a small, yet treasured (as are their fans) part of a very rich life.

Even if I wanted to (and I don’t), I can not erase my years with Nick and the band simply because we are no longer married. Those years are a part of my personal (and public) history. We are all the sum of our experiences, and there were many extraordinary ones I experienced during those years that have helped form and inform the woman I am today. He is also the father of my child…Tatjana is probably the BIGGEST, most important influence and inspiration in my life! That is why I consciously choose to honor my ex husband.

I never mentioned my past when building my food career until I had already well established myself with a thriving business that had also won several awards. In fact I doubt my clients have a clue about who I was married to, nor do they care so long as I keep their tummies happy. The proverbial cat was out of the bag once I did The Ultimate Recipe Showdown on Food Network, and some loyal fans recognized me. This lovely blog was published not long after Shaking the Tree: The colossus of Julie Anne Rhodes. I did not trade on the Duran Duran name to get to where I am… I worked hard to enjoy the status I enjoy today.

Having said that…I am extremely proud of Duran Duran and all they have accomplished before, during, and after the time I spent with them. I read Andy Taylor’s book, and while some things said about me did sting…that was HIS experience of how things happened and he is entitled to his opinion. We shared an extremely intense part of music history few outsiders will ever completely comprehend. I also nearly wet myself laughing over much of the book. I just told his wife Tracy last week how I was ROTFLMAO when I read “…Nick was too angry to speak, but Julie Anne came out with a tirade that would make a Geordie coal miner blush!”. I wish them each all the success and happiness in the world.

Boulangerie Paul’s San Danielle Sandwich
Garlicky Boursin cheese and salt cured San Danielle ham are perfectly balanced by the sweetness of the pear and peppery arugula on a freshly baked French baguette. Perfect for lunch on the go, or better still, a lovely summer picnic.
