Aja: Iʼm a single gal. No, no, you can put the worlds smallest violin away because Iʼm not complaining! No one to answer to, enjoying my friends, dating, no drama – itʼs pretty sweet life for a 26 year old. But one of the most difficult things to do as a single gal is cooking. After all, cooking for a party of one is quite lame. One way of using the Personal Chef Approach™ (PCA) to the single girl advantage is turn a chore into a social opportunity – invite your friends over for a few laughs, share a bottle of wine along with your  food preparation, then enjoy one of the dinners together, and everyone takes home their portions for the week ahead!

And yes, I’ve tried using the recipe scaler, but let’s face it – I’m still going to have some ingredients leftover when making recipes for one, so I’ll either make the full recipe, and freeze a few servings for a later date (hey, that means no cook weeks in between – which is pretty cool), or I employ another solution to turn lemons into lemonade – or should I say leftover pumpkin puree into a face mask!

As an environmentalist and co-founder of the environmental lifestyle website Eco-istas, I try to reduce my waste as much as I can; with packaging, energy use, and of course, food. After all, nothing is more upsetting to me then throwing out food because itʼs spoiled. Thatʼs why I joined the PCA™ and thatʼs why I try to turn leftover ingredients into body scrubs, moisturizers or face masks.

You can do this with a lot of ingredients: oils, dairy, certain veggies and fruits. Think about it, if itʼs good for inside your body it is great for the outside as well. Fruits, for example, are packed with vitamins and antioxidants that boost collagen, protect skin from UV damage and promote cell-turnover. I recently made Eco-istasʼ Funkinʼ Pumpkin Muffins for breakfast and used the leftover pumpkin puree to make a Pumpkin exfoliating moisturizing mask, because my skin was feeling really dry after all the traveling and late nights for work. Pumpkin gently dissolve dead skin cells, nourish dry skin and helps control acne and mixed with yogurt, honey and milk, this is the most moisturizing packed mask you can make!

Ingredients:

2 tsp pumpkin puree

1/2 tsp honey

1/4 tsp milk

1/4 tsp ground cinnamon

How toʼs

Combine all ingredients. Mix gently and apply to your face avoiding the eye area. Let the mask dry for 15-20 minutes. Rinse with warm water and apply an organic face moisturizer. Voila, your very own moisturizing mask using ingredients already in your kitchen without having to spend $50 buying something similar at the department store.

I’m heading for the kitchen to see if I have all that I need to make muffins. Made oatmeal chocolate chip ones last week and devoured them so need to make some more, healthier ones this time. Might try the mask with the leftover pumpkin. Guess that would be the time to not answer the door should anyone knock. :)
