Last Wednesday unleashed Mick Jones Rock n Roll memorabilia exhibition on the world with a rocking private view party…. now open and free to the public 18 July – 25 August 2009. Weds – Sun 11AM – 7PM. The Rock n Roll public library can be found under the Westway at 2 Acklam Road, Portobello Green, London W10 5XL (closest tube station is Ladbroke Grove).

I highly recommend it…I was blown away! Mick has written, performed, and produced some of the biggest songs in rock history (London Calling, Rock the Casbah, Should I Stay Or Should I Go, and Rush among them), he’s been in The Clash, Big Audio Dynamite, and Carbon Silicon, and produced albums for Ian Hunter and The Libertines….well it does classify him as an indisputable expert on the subject!

My jaw dropped as I entered the jam packed main room with legendary albums strewn from the ceiling, leather jackets and other rock clothing hung high around the walls with rock posters beneath. First stop was the screening room where we were engrossed with the documentary ‘Westway to the World’ on the history of The Clash.

You’ll need hours to fully take in all of the memorabilia from the Clash to Elvis amongst many others that Mick has collected through the years. There is the music room, video library room, the TV room, Mick’s office, the Joe Strummer room, the American antiques room…

…and of course a recording studio with live bands playing…one of which actually invited me to sing backing vocals with them (most amusing since I’m not even allowed to sing happy birthday in my household due to being completely tone deaf), and a positively ancient mixing desk.

But the party spilled over into the yard outside where still more bands played, libations abound, and barbecued jerk chicken with red beans and rice were served up (you know where I was hanging out).

Red Beans & Rice

Servings: 6

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound dry red kidney beans
  • 3 tablespoons canola oil
  • 1/4 cup Tasso ham, chopped
  • 1 large yellow onion, finely diced
  • 3 celery stalks, finely diced
  • 1 green bell pepper, finely diced
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 teaspoon hot sauce
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 3 bay leaves
  • 3 large cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 ham hock
  • 2 pounds Andouille sausage, chopped
  • 10 cups chicken stock
  • 1/4 cup green onions sliced for garnish
  • 2 cups white rice
  • 2 tablespoons butter
Directions:

 

1). Soak beans in a large bowl covered in water overnight. Throw out any bad ones that float to the top. Drain well.

2). Heat a large pot over medium-high heat and add oil. When ridges begin to form in the oil add Tasso. Saute 1 minute, then add onions, celery, and green peppers (the holy trinity). Add cayenne, hot sauce, and season with salt and pepper, saute 3-4 minutes, stirring frequently, until softened. Add bay leaves, garlic, ham hock, and Andouille sausage; cooking another 4 minutes to brown the meat. Add beans and 8 cups of chicken stock, bring to boil. Reduce heat and simmer over medium-low heat, stirring frequently and adding chicken stock as necessary to prevent the beans from scorching for about 2 1/2-3 hours. Beans should be soft and thickened. Remove bay leaves.

3). Meanwhile, prepare rice to package instructions adding in butter.

4). Place red beans over buttery rice, garnish with green onions if desired, and serve.

Serving Suggestions: Great with barbecued chicken, and garden salad or slaw.

    2 blogs?? Yes I will follow, you've sucked me in! hehe I love The Clash…I have "This is a radio Clash" as my ringtone..yeah I know, I am 38 going on 16…:) Penelope!
