This blog (click here to see my first ever post), Jewels from The Roving Stove began exactly three years ago today with my taking you “from VIP entrances in Versace to service entrances in my apron.” Well lately it’s been focused mainly on the food and apron part, and  I’m ready for a good healthy dose of the fashion and

style part again, aren’t you? More specifically hats. Not only does one wear a hat on a birthday, they are also the abbreviation accentuating a great look.

Hats abbreviate the look

Hats are the accessory that abbreviates your look

At one point in my life I had an entire wardrobe solely for hats, and I still treasure my antique hat box collection. Hats are great for those “wishing to be incognito” moments, and a real lifesaver on those bad hair days. Yes, hats can be an important part of anyone’s fashion arsenal.

My only rule is never wear a hat that wears you. If you feel self-consious in it, it won’t do you any favors, love. On the other hand, I applaud those that can pull off an over the top, attention grabbing millinery masterpiece, so I say go for it – if you have an equally bold personality to match.

A friend recently told me that you should never wear the hat of a deceased friend or relative. Evidently, you will inherit all of their bad luck in doing so. Another superstition I’d rather avoid than test, is never place a hat on a bed, again it is said to invite very bad luck.

Sometimes hats are to keep us warm or dry

Hats keep us both warm and dry, a necessity in London where the sun only shines approximately 60 days per year. Hats are also useful for protecting your face and head from too much sun. There again, so can a

What do I consider to be the most useful aspect of being a hat lover and collector? They make an excellent disguise for one of those bad hair days we all suffer from occasionally. If not, I’ll eat my hat, because

sometimes the “service entrances in my apron” part is actually the more interesting and fun part of the journey. Especially when I found this hat shaped pasta in a specialty cheese shop. I stuffed them with ricotta, goat cheese, sun-dried tomatoes, and served them in a sage butter sauce, YUM!

Please join me here if you want to continue to travel with me from “VIP entrances in my Versace to service entrances in my apron.” Tell me, what hats do you (or would you) like to wear?
